Tailored support for every child’s unique journey: The EYES Program at the Y Whittlesea.

Jun 17, 2025 | aliciamarcano | News

At the Y Whittlesea, we believe in the power of inspired young people, and we know that this journey begins in the early years. Our Early Years Engagement Support (EYES) Program was created to support children and families across our Early Years Services to help identify concerns with children’s learning and development.

The EYES program is an initiative of the Y Whittlesea which was established in recognition of the gap that exists in families getting access to timely information and guidance on early intervention supports for their children.

We understand that every child is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. That’s why the EYES team is here to listen, guide and support families and educators every step of the way.

Tailored support for every child’s unique journey: The EYES Program at the Y Whittlesea.

The Power of Inclusion

Inclusion it’s a powerful practice that helps all children grow and thrive. When children of all abilities learn and play together, everyone benefits. Here’s how:

– It helps children develop knowledge, skills, and confidence.

– It nurtures individual strengths and abilities.

– It builds awareness and appreciation for diversity.

– It encourages friendships and learning through shared experiences.

– It removes barriers and supports real, meaningful participation.

– It increases self-esteem and supports emotional wellbeing.

– Most importantly, it fosters a sense of connection and belonging.

What Does the EYES Team Do?

Our EYES team works across our early learning centres and kindergartens to identify developmental concerns, support families, and connect children to early intervention pathways. Our goal is to help children thrive at home, in education settings, and beyond.

We offer support with:

– Positive behaviour guidance strategies for both families and educators

– Assistance applying for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)

– NDIS advice and guidance through the early childhood approach

– Help applying for funding to support your child’s developmental goals

– Support connecting with trusted therapy providers

– Collaboration with your child’s therapy team (e.g. speech or occupational therapists) to ensure consistent strategies are used across all environments

Understanding the Early Childhood Approach (NDIS)

If your child is under 7 and experiencing developmental delays, you may be eligible for support under the Early Childhood Approach, part of the NDIS. A formal diagnosis is not required for children under 7—only evidence of delay in at least two areas of development.

Supports may include:

-Access to community health and mainstream services

-Access to private therapy providers

– Access to Community services such as play groups, support groups

– Help applying for NDIS funding to support developmental goals

If your child qualifies, their NDIS plan will be based on goals that matter most to you, such as improving communication, play skills, self-care and independence. The plan can fund services like speech therapy, occupational therapy, and behaviour support.

Respecting Your Family’s Privacy

We understand that cultural background and community expectations can influence decisions about seeking help. Some families may feel pressure not to access services like NDIS.

Please know that your child’s wellbeing comes first. The supports we offer through EYES are confidential and shared only with those you choose. Early intervention today can reduce the need for future support—and does not necessarily lead to a diagnosis or “label.”

Common Concerns: FAQs

“I’m not sure if my child’s behaviour is normal.”

We’re here to help. Some behaviours may be age-appropriate, while others may need support. You’re welcome to chat confidentially with our team.

“My child’s kinder teacher says they’re not ready for school—what now?”

It’s your right to decide when your child starts school. However, it’s important to consider their social and emotional development. In some cases, children may benefit from a second year of 4-year-old kindergarten. Your child’s kindergarten teacher will prepare a transition statement to help guide this conversation. Stay in close communication with both your kinder and your intended school for the best outcome.

Real Families, Real Stories

At the heart of EYES are the families we work with. Here are just a few stories of impact, please note Names have been changed to protect the child’s privacy.

Max

Referred to EYES in 2023, Max showed signs of developmental delay. After working closely with his family and educators, using targeted strategies and consistent support, he made remarkable progress and no longer needs referral to early intervention.

Tom

Tom, diagnosed with Lowe’s Syndrome and suspected ASD, experienced a reduction in support funding. In collaboration with his OT, we appealed and successfully restored his full 15 hours of support, ensuring he could fully participate and thrive in his kinder year.

Liam

Liam’s family was supported in accessing NDIS. When his mum noticed his therapy wasn’t helping, we investigated and discovered the provider wasn’t a qualified OT. We helped the family find a trusted provider and avoid further delay in care. The family stated they were very grateful for this support and would not have thought to investigate the provider as they trusted their word. it has come to our attention that a number of families have been impacted by this, that’s why we’ve created a comprehensive guide to help families accessing NDIS-funded early intervention.
