Daily Dialogue with Your Child

Jul 1, 2021 | sarah | Education

Creating meaningful conversations with your child after child care can be a great way for them to build communication skills and a great way for you as a parent to learn about your child.

Here are five examples of meaningful conversation starters (from StartingBlocks.gov.au):

Focus on friends

Children express themselves easier by talking about their friends.

“I saw Amy at pick up today, what did she have for lunch?”

Tangible items

Mention some items that your child would see or play with at the service, this helps them recall situations.

“Those wooden blocks looked fun, what did the kids build with them?”

Connect to their interests

Think about activities your child enjoys at home and see if they can bring them into the service.

“You love our puzzles at home, which one should we bring with you tomorrow?”

Documentation inspiration

Use images or notes from the educators at your service.

“Look at this lovely photo of you at the sandpit, what did the sand feel like in your toes?”

I wonder if…

‘I wonder if’ questions are a fantastic way to tap into your child’s imagination and goals.

“I wonder what you’d make for lunch if you were cooking tomorrow?”
